Nintendo focuses on Europe as Dollar declines.

June 9th, 2008

Anyone can look at the numbers and realize the most popular console in the “Next gen” console war is the Nintendo Wii. The Wii is still selling out at most retailers on the day the systems hit the floor. The reason for the sell out was due in part to Nintendo limiting production to keep demand high and partly due to the interest in the way the games are played using the remote and nunchuck.

Word has come out recently that Nintendo is beginning to focus on Europe for the majority of it’s sales due to the Strength of the Euro in comparison to the US dollar. Europe is receiving as many as four times the amount of product as the US.

Grand Theft Auto IV Update

May 10th, 2008

Okay folks, they just released a “patch” for GTA4. Great.

Maybe my first review was actually a bit to hasty.

Consoles are becoming PCs. I guess to some extent that’s true and I’ve mentioned it in previous posts, but when I pay $60 for a console game, I really expect it to be the game and not some beta version with obvious bugs like loading screens that lock up requiring restarting the game, or if you’re in too deep for that a series of convoluted work arounds like making new profiles and turning off network connections.

The long load time is starting to wear on me along with the long periods of time with no saves that end up causing half of my game play from the last two days to be redundant trips all the way across town to pick up packie and his crew for the 3 leaf clover mission, which I failed a total of 5 times, 3 times were do to bad A.I. on Packie’s part, you know, just standing around being shot in the head by the cops while you and Derrick are halfway down the subway tunnel kind of thing.

Oh well, it’s still worth the 5 stars for the times where you just saved and just run around beating people to death with a bat or shiving them with the knife.

Have a good Weekend!

Grand Theft Auto IV

May 2nd, 2008

While it may seem sort of rude to not write a review of this game the day following it’s release it’s actually a compliment. You see I’ve been too busy playing it lately to write a review, but now I am back at my job and have nothing better to do than write about the game.

So far GTA4 is proving just as enjoyable as it’s predecessors. Rock Star uses itself as a platform to parody our American society. Plenty of “hot conversations” with orgasmic cries of “Oh, Yes, tell me more!” and the like. The radio stations have the great song lineups and humorous DJs you have gotten used to while playing the other games and as an added bonus Rockstar has given you a TV at your safe house to watch equally hilarious shows. My favorite is the knife shopping  show.

Cousin Roman from Grand Theft Auto 4

The graphics are good, but not as good as Assassin’s Creed, but it feels much larger than Assassin’s Creed did and that could account for the less than top notch quality. The Explosions are beautiful though and I recommend blowing up at least one car as soon as you can.

The control is a little lacking now when compared to some of the other games I have played lately and does not feel as smooth, but I quickly got used to it.

You are Niko Bellic a Russian immigrant moving in with your cousin, who happens to be involved with some less than reputable people. You do some jobs and before you know it you’re back in the flow you had in your heyday on San Andreas.

The story so far is fairly enjoyable. You have ran away from some bad debt in Russia and come to America to live with your cousin Roman. He introduces you to Michelle who you then have the option of dating. He also introduces you to the guys you’ll be working with and for for the beginning of the game.

As far as the entertainment factor goes this game is fantastic just like all the ones from years gone by.

Based off the immense amount of detail, story, action and entertainment I give this game 5 stars out of 5.

Mario Kart Wii

April 28th, 2008

Yesterday was spent playing lots of Mario Kart Wii. My wife brought it home with her from work yesterday along with the wheel. She was really excited about playing it but I’m really hard to impress. I figured it would be just as good as the other Mario Kart games have been in the past and I was right. It’s just as enjoyable as it’s predecessors. Using the wheel may take some getting used to. The first thing I did when I started racing was try to turn using the D-Pad which doesn’t work obviously, but after that first time I didn’t do it anymore, so I guess I learn from my mistakes.

Honestly I never played the other Mario Kart games much. This one has plenty of characters though. Mario and Luigi, their counterparts, their significant others, their enemies and their friends. There are 8 cups in the 50cc races, 4 are immediately available, the other 4 are unlockable along with 2 more karts and 2 more characters, King Boo and Diddy Kong. Each cup series has 4 races and the winner in points wins the cup. You can also unlock the ability to use your Mii as the driver.

Mario Kart Wii

Aside from your Mii being used as the driver, they show up here and there through out the races. The audience is made up of all the Miis on your Wii and after winning a division your Mii shows up as a giant statue. You can also submit your “photo” to an online gallery of some sort.

That’s as far as I played, but my wife played it on the Wifi channel and really enjoyed it.

This one gets a definite 5 out of 5 stars from me.

I want your content!

April 25th, 2008

I’ve considered giving it up, but this is more or less an experiment for me. This is only the second “real” website I’ve ever managed. The first one isn’t really worth mentioning and probably only generated about 50 hits a month.

I am determined to achieve at least 1000 a month here. The problem is content as always. Despite the fact that I have played many games in my time, I haven’t been really impressed with very many. My wife plays crap loads of games, but she generally stays occupied enough drawing or playing the games that she doesn’t feel motivated to write reviews or guides or anything else.

I am accepting your content. Even if it’s old blog entries from you. Send the link to me or submit a plain text review and I will check it out and post it up with a link back to your page. Just include the review and a 1-5 star rating.

I get content and you get link popularity, not a bad trade off I don’t think.

Frontlines: Fuel of War

April 16th, 2008

Tanga is selling the original PSP refurbished for $120.99 today only.

I realize that this is called “Console”giant, but this is another game I played on PC and I’m going to review based off of that version.

Frontlines: Fuel of War was released for the Xbox 360 and the PC in late February. I picked it up about 3 weeks ago after playing Crysis became sort of tedious. Frontlines: Fuel of War is a first person shooter that takes place in a future that seems as if it could be a distinct possibility at this point. The world is at war over oil in 2024 and (at least in the single player campaign) you are a soldier in the Western Coalition. You are a member of a crack team of troops trying to seize key positions to control the remaining fuel and the Red Star Alliance aims to keep it for themselves.

Frontlines: Fuel of War screenshot

The weapon selection can make or break a FPS and Frontlines has a great selection. All the standards are included, SMGs, assault rifles, grenade launchers, repeating rocket launchers, pistols and more, but the game really shines through with it’s awesome drones and the airstrike capability. Remote control helicopters launch missiles at tanks and troops, small rocket launchers fire from small sets of tank treads and almost as impressive remote control drone planes and explosive cars all send the enemies to their graves.

Wow, I almost forgot the vehicles, so far I have flown a helicopter unsuccessfully, driven an armored carrier, light tanks and heavy tanks. The controls on the PC match most other FPS and match Unreal 3 exactly since it utilizes the same engine.

The difficulty factor is definitely present in the game since I am have had to respawn up to 5 times on some missions and I am playing on easy.

Graphically the game isn’t as fascinatingly detailed as Crysis, but holds it’s own. The fact that it is less graphically intense than Crysis is really a good thing, meaning that a lot of PCs can play it without the difficulty associated with Crysis. I can’t guaranty the performance on your machine, but mine is an 3.2 ghz dual core, 2gbs of OCZ gaming ram and a Geforce 8600 gts. I can play it at maximum settings with no issues.

O.K., Great. FPS are not great games because of their stories, generally. They are great games due to multiplayer action. I can’t speak for it as I haven’t played multiplayer yet. I could go on a long tangent of speculating what it would be like to play, but I’ll spare you the eye strain.

All in all a good FPS is a good FPS, but since Crysis is the new standard by which all other FPS are being judged, at least in the PC world, I have to say 4 stars. Enjoy killing each other with remote controlled helicopters.

This will now be available on our reviews page.

Nintendo’s Retro Rebirth

April 16th, 2008

I never really knew what the “Game & Watch” was nor did I care. All I knew was that “Mr. Game & Watch” was an unlockable character in Super Smash Bros. for the Gamecube.  I was looking through google images for something, I honestly don’t remember what, and came across this image.

Donkey Kong Game and Watch

Well it’s easy to see the resemblance between these and their descendant the DS.

nintendo ds lite is a fancy game and watch

O.K., so technology has improved and the styles have changed, but the idea is the same as always. Entertainment in the palm of your hands.

According to Wikipedia the DS has a total of 563 games somewhere between being old enough to be used to shim up that unstable table to not even being released yet. Game & Watch had a good stretch, being produced from 1980 to 1991, but only 71 games and due to the manufacturing process, each is it’s own handheld system and they vary greatly from single screen editions to double screen editions like Donkey Kong.

Apparently the Game & Watch had the original implementation of the D-Pad, which makes it a fantastic breakthrough in gaming history.

How long can the Nintendo Wii Stay Number One?

April 15th, 2008

The biggest complaint I’ve had about the DS and the Wii is that most games use only the gimmicky controls. Sometimes you don’t want to swing your arms around to play a game, or it’s easier and more absorbing to use the time tested old fashioned controls.

Don’t get me wrong. The controls are wonderful and very intuitive on some games. Standard FPS are wonderful on the Wii. I found Call of Duty 3 was a very good example of great playability of first person shooters with the Wiimote, but the FPS that are less traditional like Manhunt 2 are a different story. Trying to perform the executions got old when the Wii didn’t register my movements immediately and I looked like I was having a seizure trying to follow the instructions on the screen, but never-the-less games like Elebits and Link’s Crossbow Training are stellar with the Wiimote. The Wiimote is very intuitive to use on Wii Sports and Wii Play also. The Wii fails at ports though due to the gimmick that is the Wiimote. I have noticed that the new release “Nights” gives the option of controlling with the classic controller, the Wiimote or the Wiimote and Nunchuck combination. The Wii can maintain credibility for the longterm if the games made or ported to it have the ability to use the classic style of controller.

The DS is more of the same issue. My wife has loved her DS (now a DS Lite) since she first got it with Nintendogs long ago. Once again some of the games are great especially the minigame style games like Warioware and Brain age, but other games seem like they use the touchscreen for no other reason than that it is there. When the option is presented to her my wife now opts to use the standard old fashion controls to play her less than perfectly adapted  games.

All game consoles and handhelds have their own strengths and weaknesses of course, but when you get right down to it, the consoles don’t sell themselves, the games for them do. Nintendo and the game developers should realize that and make the game playability as enjoyable and intuitive as possible using what they have available even if the best solution is to throw out the use of the touchscreen and motion sensing capability of the Wii.

Obviously these things aren’t going to change until the sales start dropping off. The DS and the Wii are the best selling out of all the systems.

Still I don’t know much anyway, my preferred gaming console is my PC. At the rate the consoles are going they’ll all be PCs soon enough.

Update: Since I originally wrote this a few months ago I have heard news that Microsoft has been working on a controller similar to the Wii Remote. While I don’t expect Xbox 360 sales to break through the console sale roof, it may hurt the Wii’s sales.

Consolegiant.com

April 9th, 2008

My initial intention with this site was to try to sell the domain name to a retailer, but the more work I put into it the less I want to sell it.

Over the next few weeks I will be reorganizing and adding/editing content.  The most important change I need to implement is site organization and won’t be apparent to the viewer. I also intend on removing the eBay RSS feeds from the index page and possibly removing the console specific RSS feeds and turning them into a general feed on a page entitled “eBay RSS feeds” or something similarly generic.

I will still be entertaining offers for this domain name but I am enjoying what I am doing enough to just hang on to it and get some traffic flowing for a while.

A couple of facts to consider on June 1st.

This domain should be indexed by all the major search engines and will hopefully receive 35 to 40 hits daily minimum.  It will continue to be targeted towards general gaming merchandise and reviews and miscellaneous other entries related to video games and related products.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and have a good day.
